Moving to the Philadelphia Area: Bala Cynwyd
If you are considering moving to the Philadelphia area, you may not know exactly where you’d like to live. Is Bala Cynwyd right for you? While Center City appeals to some, many relocators find themselves choosing to live on the Main Line. The “Main Line” refers to the suburbs to the west of Center City. Some of the reasons transplants give for choosing to buy homes on the Main Line in general (and Bala Cynwyd in particular) include terrific schools, suburban lifestyle but with the charm of older homes in established neighborhoods, ease of commuting and plenty of shopping, dining and service options easily available.
If you just want a quick overview, I encourage you to take a look at my “Neighborhood in a Nutshell” series. For the Bala Cynwyd post, click here. Bala Cynwyd Overview
Bala Cynwyd might be a great choice for your new home in the Philadelphia suburbs if you are looking for access to center city, the airport, the Jersey shore, etc. The Lower Merion Township schools have an excellent rating, and there are many very “neighborhoody” streets. In Bala Cynwyd, you’ll find varied housing styles and prices. There are twins on modest lots that are among the most affordable homes in the township, as well as larger single family homes. In general, Bala Cynwyd is is not where you’ll find estate-sized homes or large properties.
Bala Cynwyd: What it’s like to live here
A favorite Bala Cynwyd neighborhood is College Park, which is made up of mostly stone colonials with some split levels thrown in. This area is very popular as it sees little pass through traffic and has wide streets. Lots of people walk dogs or push strollers and it is very family-friendly. Belmont Hills is a more affordable section of Bala Cynwyd, featuring some single homes but mostly twins and row homes on small lots. Belmont Hills residents tend to know their neighbors and tout their tight-knit community. This Main Line town also boasts two terrific libraries, a community pool complex, two train stations and the beloved Cynwyd Trail. Many people like to take the trail over the river to shop or eat in Philadelphia’s vibrant community of Manayunk.
Who lives here? Bala Cynwyd tends to be home to a fairly diverse population. There are many families who enjoy the proximity to the elementary and middle schools, the nearby shopping and dining options. and convenient location. A good portion of residents are professionals who work in center city Philadelphia. There is also a large group of people who work at Penn, Drexel and University of the Sciences, all located in West Philly–many commute by bike!
