No one wants to think about being burglarized or sustaining a house fire right after moving in to a new home, but….it’s a really good idea to docuent your belongings in case you need to file an insurance claim. I always recommend to my buyers, once they are moved in and have their things up on the wall, Oriental rugs in place, collections displayed that they video tape every room in their home. There are a number of different ways to document your possesions, but video is easiest. I suggest you walk aroud the house, from one end to the other, narrating as you go and pointing out particularly valuable items. If you have serial numbers and/or receipts, include those either in the video or in a spreadsheet or other document. Don’t forget that those “everyday” items, like dishes, clothing, children’s toys, tools, etc. have value that adds up, too. Here is some additional information.

This is spot on, and would add an annual review of your homeowner’s policy with your agent, and get a second opinion. The risk appetite of insurance companies change and only an agent who represents a variety of companies would be privy to this change.
