With July 4th almost upon us, many people are considering what sort of entertainment looks most appealing this year. Fireworks on the water? Concert in the park? Local borough parades and celebrations? All of those are great options. Another terrific event (I’ve been!) is the Kutztown Folk Festival, running June 30-July 8 this year. Never heard of it? Well, maybe not, but that’s not because it’s not worthy of recognition! This event holds a bunch of superlative designations, including oldest folk festival as well as largest quilt sale in the country. With a heavy Pennsylvania Dutch influence, you’ll experience a culture as well as enjoy a fair. There is a musical stage, featuring a variety of performers including the Sauerkraut Brass Band (who would want to miss that?). My favorite part of the Festival, though, is watching the craftsmen demonstrate and explain their work. You’ll find blacksmiths, hex sign-makers, papercutters (scherenschnitte is the name of this specific German style of the art), leather floor cloth painters, pewter workers, soap and candle makers and lots more unusual craftsmen you don’t see elsewhere. Here’s a list. Oh, and the food? It’s Pennsylvania Dutch. ‘Nuff said. Go.
